History of the United States from the Revolutionary Period

Keeping the following in mind ... American colonial period marked by disagreement between Britain?s North American colonies over the British Parliament?s right to tax the colonies Federalists versus Anti-Federalists over role of the national government versus that of the individual states during the writing and ratification of the US Constitution Alexander Hamilton?s vision for a strong central government versus Thomas Jefferson?s vision of a confederation of small, republican states Lincoln?s commitment to preserving the Union versus the Confederacy?s belief in the rights of states to dissolve the Union Concept of ?sovereignty?

Questions to address: What has been the overriding theme of the first half of the history of the United States from the revolutionary period beginning in 1763 and ending with the surrender of the Confederate armies in April 1865? In the end, which side won the argument and how (when)? Remember, ?...the United States are...? versus ?...the United States is...?

Your assignment: In one paragraph, address the two questions above. I?m looking for a very brief statement of the conflict and its resolution as of 1876 and the end of Reconstruction. In theory, this assignment can be accomplished in two sentences, but depending on your response, you may need a couple more. This is the primary point I?ve tried to hone in on during every class meeting as the overriding theme of the first half of US History. Only with point #2 am I looking for a specific event.
