Why are you doing this?

This assignment asks you to assess the persuasiveness and quality of Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” (the abridged version provided in class). To do this you will identify and discuss how King uses rhetorical strategies, evidence, and language to persuade his audience(s). This assignment will allow you to demonstrate and practice the skills covered in the first half of our class: summarizing and paraphrasing; and analyzing rhetoric, evidence, and language. Here are some of the guidelines

How should you do this?

The overall purpose of your analysis is to answer two questions: how does Martin Luther King attempt to persuade his audience?

To answer this question you should:

  1. Read, and re-read, King’s letter.
  2. Review notes from class on the letter to aid your comprehension and understanding.
  3. Review class material for paraphrasing and analyzing.
  4. Identify examples (quotes, phrases, or sections to paraphrase) from the letter that you might want to discuss.
    1. You will need to identify and discuss two examples of rhetoric, two examples of evidence, and two example of language.
  5. Begin outlining and drafting. Classes in Week 6 will be dedicated to working on this assignment, but you should get as much done as possible outside of class time.
  6. Edit and submit your analysis, with a cover page, to Blackboard by the end of day on Friday June 15th

What should the assignment look like?

In the second half of WRIT100 you will get additional chance to practice analysis. You will also these pieces together to form a more complete analysis of a text. For now, your analysis should contain 4 sections:

  1. An APA cover page
  2. One page analyzing rhetoric in King’s letter
  3. One page analyzing evidence in King’s letter, and
  4. One page analyzing language in King’s letter

Each section should formatted to APA guidelines and double-spaced with 12 point, times new roman font.

Are the examples properly integrated with signal phrases and citations?

Does the analysis explain the quality of the evidence?

Is the explanation logically and adequately developed?

Language Analysis

Does the analysis present two accurate and appropriate examples of language?

Are the examples properly integrate with signal phrases and citations?

Is each example explained to show why the use language adds or detracts from the author’s argument?

Is the explanation logically and adequately developed?

Mechanics

Are all quotes and paraphrases integrated using signal phrases?

Are all quotes and paraphrases accompanied by an accurate APA citation?

Are paraphrases true to the original and avoid word-swapping?

Is the analysis written in level-appropriate language, free from distracting grammar and spelling errors?
