A virtual organization describes a network of autonomous firms that are usually collaborate temporarily to provide a product or service. A virtual organization takes form of virtual teams, leadership, or virtual office.

[blur] The main objective of a virtual organization is to ensure timely provision of innovative and high quality products or services to serve the demands of customers effectively. Virtual services are rooted in the computer industry. This is where computers are used to store and access data that is larger than their memory capacity. Virtual organizations are developed in the concept of the traditional hierarchical structure of management where the top most management controls the operations of the whole firm[1]. [/blur]

[blur] With the current geographical and organizational diversity, virtual organizations allow for integration of operations among various departments and enable the management to control the operations from a central point. The main advantage of virtual organization is that it saves time and expenses involved in travelling to access expert information and advice. [/blur]

[blur] Virtual organizations eliminate the need to travel since one can readily access the information needed remotely. It also enables formation of organizational teams irrespective of the geographical proximity of the members. Team members can conveniently subscribe to the virtual platform and efficiently collaborate in solving tasks without the need to link physically[2]. [/blur]

[blur] The main challenge faced by virtual organization is that they lack personal interactions among the contributors which is critical for effective decision making. Further, there is limited use of nonverbal cues such as body movements and facial expression and this limits good communication. The fact that the members of virtual teams have never met physically limits social interactions hence bounds social interaction among the team members. An example of virtual organization is Ensemble, an organization that outsources production and manufacturing services from other companies. 3. Modern World and IT

            [blur] One of the major issue that I learnt about the modern world and IT is its ability to link people from different regions and workstations to create a diverse work team through virtualization. The fact that an organization can conveniently establish expert and dynamic teams from diverse organizational and geographical backgrounds without having to common physical ground stunned me. [/blur]

[blur] This influenced my understanding of the changing dynamic in the working environment. These have transformed concepts such as globalization, which thrive due to the existence of IT. This influenced my perception of virtual organization in the light of enhancing interaction with people from different backgrounds. I realized that this invention in virtualization would possibly promote decision making in firms and through formation of diverse teams. [/blur]
